Many people do it when they accidentally strike their finger with a hammer then instinctively rub it to help soothe the pain. Mothers do it when they're tending to a sick child and they gently rub the child's back as if willing away the ailment.

Despite the unfamiliar packaging, Ron Burr said the concept of "energy healing" has been around forever. But in Western society, it was never given a name and taught as a legitimate means of healing.

Hoping to share his love of the Asian-based complementary healing practices, Burr, a longtime tai chi instructor, will begin offering classes next week at Millsaps College that teach three different methods: qi gong, reiki and quantum touch.

At their core, the Hattiesburg resident said the three methods - that propose to channel and manipulate energy - all promote relaxation and stress reduction and help curb other health woes.

But if practised effectively, he said they also can relieve symptoms such as back pain and headaches.

"I'm going to teach very effective ways for giving treatment to yourself and to other people," Burr said.

While the concept of energy healing is connected with faith and religion for most Westerners and may be difficult to grasp as a medical option, Burr said he thinks in time more people will come to appreciate it just as they now view acupuncture as a viable health option.

Dana Tate, a Tupelo massage therapist who also practices reiki, said she got into the Japanese-based practice because she wanted to increase the benefits she could offer to her clients.

"I've always felt the power of touch was really important in facilitating healing," said Tate, 34. "I was doing different forms of touch therapy that I had learned in massage school, but it just wasn't enough."

Tate said she believes when she is practising reiki - which means universal life force - she is simply helping to channel God's energy to help others. Under reiki, which is not a religion, practitioners believe health and disease are a matter of a person's invisible life force being disrupted.

"There is no magic, no poof, no big secret that is held by a secret clan. It's just something that is common, but hard to explain and people just automatically think magic, woo-woo stuff," she said. "This is something that people want to be aware of, and I just see it as sharing love. It's all the same because it all comes from the same place. With reiki, you're making yourself an empty vessel so that God's energy can flow through you to someone else."

Tate said many people would be astounded to learn of people within the medical community who seek out training in the Asian healing arts as a supplement to their traditional training.

"Lots of medical doctors and people in pharmaceuticals are into this sort of thing," she said. "They just don't want their co-workers to know they are into it. But when they have an experience with it and realize it's not something to be ashamed of, that's when they start to talk about it and treating it as a tool for facilitating healing."

There isn't much science on the effectiveness of energy healing treatments. Most of the information available is anecdotal.

But there have been some federally funded, controlled studies indicating reiki may help in pain relief as well as lowering blood pressure and boosting the immune system. Critics say the results occurred because of the placebo effect, meaning people felt better because they believed the treatment would help.

In the United Kingdom, some hospitals already use reiki as part of their complementary and alternative medicine treatments for patients.

And in clinics and hospitals in China, qi gong is practised widely, according to the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Burr said those seeking the six-week training at Millsaps, which costs $140, should come expecting to at least learn relaxation and stress reduction techniques. If they open their minds, he said, "the energy knows what to do and where to go. I don't know of any limitations."

Stanley Graham, a tai chi instructor at Millsaps and Burr's former pupil, said when he started practician qi gong and tai chi years ago, he suffered from several health problems, including high blood pressure and bad knees from playing football in his youth. "The normal approach to medicine had pretty much written off my knees," said Graham, 59. "I tried tai chi and I got in touch with the chi, the energy in my body. My health radically improved. My orthopaedic health is better, my calmness...everything improved." Graham, a production design manager for Mississippi Public Broadcasting, said he always shares with others the benefits tai chi and energy healing have played in his life.

"I happened to have been brought up in the Western hemisphere and I know that there are million and millions of others brought up in other countries who believe in other processes," he said. "I was open to that because they have been practising it for thousands of years. It's just about getting in touch with a side of yourself that you didn't know was there."

We already know, that Aloe vera is the herb for minor burns. This was recently confirmed in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand.

Keep a potted aloe on your kitchen sill. It requires no care, except a weekly watering. For minor burns, snip off a tick leaf and slit it open. Scoop out the gel from the inner leaf and apply it to the burn.
