1) HEALING CHRONIC CONDITIONS THROUGH REIKI

All of us have stories of “quick” healings with using Reiki. Usually, these immediate healings occur when Reiki is applied soon after a minor injury, or when the emotional issue is related to a current event.


Typically, a client with a chronic condition does not experience an immediate healing. One hour of Reiki generally does not take away a condition that has been a part of the client’s life for months, or years – although miracles are always a possibility. Chronic conditions are complex, emanating within a person’s whole being. While a condition may be centered in one physical area of the body, its effect spreads throughout the physical, mental/emotional and spiritual components of the person.


My own healing journey demonstrates this reality. I was a toddler when stricken with the polio virus. My legs and feet were greatly affected; my lower limbs are still atrophied and I continue to walk with a limp. It was 45 years from the onset of polio to the day I had my first Reiki experience, as a client. What brought me to the session was severe chronic fatigue, a common symptom of post-polio syndrome. The fatigue started to leave my body during that first session, and within a few sessions, it was gone and has not returned (14 years later). What I did not realize then was this was only the first step in my healing journey.


What has happened over the past 14 years is truly amazing. Many “minor” physical improvements, release of emotional blockages and spiritual healings have changed my life. The physical improvements build on one another. One evening while using Reiki, I felt a shift in my hip joints; it felt like someone reached into the socket and turned the bones. I immediately walked around and felt the difference in my gait. The following day, I felt the muscles in my hips and thighs become a little sore, as they were being used in a slightly different way. The limp improved a little bit – again. These small improvements are still happening.


Emotionally, new memories arise, often as a result of something that happened that day. One snowy day, a fear of falling in an un-plowed parking lot overwhelmed me. Certainly, I have had many falls over the years, especially on snow and ice. I realized I was feeling the fears I had after one especially bad fall, when I was a young mother. Over the next few weeks, I intentionally used Reiki to release many fears embedded in my memory. Now, I have a healthy, and realistic, respect towards icy sidewalks – not to be feared, but to be faced with caution, and reassurance. I ask for protection when walking on a treacherous path.


The spiritual healing is what truly fills my soul! Growing up as that little girl who was so different from other children, unable to run and play sports, was not easy. I felt “less than” others, and became a high achiever in the things I could do. I became an excellent student and a good listener; I had many good friends. My husband and I were brought together and continue to have a blessed marriage and family. But, deep inside, I still felt less than whole. The Reiki healing energies have healed this old belief. Now, I know that I am unconditionally loved – just as all people are unconditionally loved by the Divine Spirit. Feeling connected to the One is beautiful indeed.


My chronic condition continues to be a part of my life. By using Reiki every day of my life, the healing continues. Recently, I have been concentrating on my little feet, listening to my Guidance. Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night, and my feet were vibrating, strongly. What new miracles does the Divine have in store for me?… And, for you?

2) “BEET” YOUR WAY BACK TO A HEALTHIER BODY

In an era where clever marketing has transformed exotic berries, tubers and plant extracts from geographically distant regions into “super foods,” ostensibly better (and that much more expensive!) than culinary standards found at your local supermarket, e.g.  garlic,  onion, and  kale, we should be reminded that the true nutritional super heroes are too busy performing anonymous feats of healing to garnish that kind of attention.


Which leads us to beets. Anything we can eat that bleeds as red and readily as the beet deserves our immediate respect. In fact, this vegetable often leaves a veritable crime scene behind it, converting a spotless kitchen counter into a nutrient-dense blood bath in a matter of minutes. There is ancient wisdom buried in the ‘doctrine of signatures’ that reveals itself so bloodily in the beet: it nourishes our blood and circulatory system. Indeed, thanks to the burgeoning growth of food science on the topic, we now know that beets are one of Nature’s finest cardiovascular tonics.


Beet’s Blood Vessel Dilating Properties


A 2008 study published in the journal  Hypertension found that beets contain pharmacologically significant quantities of blood vessel dilating nitrate. Three hours after ingesting 500 ml of beet juice study subjects experience a significant drop in blood pressure that could be directly correlated with increased plasma nitrate concentrations.  As endothelial dysfunction, or the inability of the blood vessels to dilate fully, is considered the ‘canary in the trousers,’ beets’ legendary ability in ancient times to enhance virility and act as an aphrodisiac now makes perfect scientific sense.


Beet Back Muscle Fatigue


But beets don’t just increase cardiovascular and ‘bedroom’ performance but athletic performance as well.   In 2009, a study published in the  Journal of Applied Physiology  found that dietary nitrate supplementation in the form of beetroot juice reduced the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise and enhanced the tolerance to high-intensity exercise.


A follow up study published in the same journal in 2010 found that nitrate-rich beetroot juice also enhances muscle contractile efficiency during knee-extensor exercise in humans.  The researchers hypothesized that the observed beneficial effect may be due to a reduced ATP cost of muscle force production.


Beet Back Infections


Consider that beets ‘live’ in the dirt, a place full of microbes which love a free meal. This means that nature has equipped the plant with natural defenses. No wonder that beet has been found to fight off the following infectious organisms:


Beet pectin has been found to inhibit the synthesis of types A and B staphylococcal enterotoxins. Beet extract has been found to reduce influenza A infectivity and lethality. Beet root has been found capable of inhibiting Epstein-Barr virus associated tumor formation.


Undoubtedly, future research will find beet to have a wider range of antimicrobial applications. But beet’s powers don’t end there.   Other already researched properties include:


Liver Damage: A 2006 study found that beet root has significant dose-dependent liver-protective properties against the chemical carbontetrachloride.  More recently, research has found that it also protects against N-nitrosodiethylamine associated liver damage.


Cardiovascular Disease: While the “LDL  cholesterol is bad” myth is almost imbecilic in its simplicity, those looking for ways to modulate the lipid ratio naturally in favor of the medical establishment’s largely drug-company drafted lipid guidelines can rest assured that beet can help. A 2000 study found beet fiber was capable of simultaneously increasing HDL and lowering LDL levels; perhaps far more impressive, the study also found close to a 30% reduction in cholesterol plaque accumulation in the aorta of those animals fed beet fiber.


Radiation Exposure: Compounds found in beets known as betalains have been found to reduce toxicity associated with gamma radiation exposure.


Cancer: Beetroot juice has been found to reduce adverse effects caused by DMBA, a chemical associated with mammary cancer risk.[xi]  Beetroot has also been found to exhibit anti-cancer properties in prostate cancer cell lines at toxicity levels far lower than chemo-agents such as doxorubicin.


Beets, of course, have basic nutritional gifts to offer in addition to their aforementioned medicinal properties. They contain exceptionally high levels of folate at 148 mcg or 37% the Daily Value in just a one cup serving. They also sport an impressive 6.7 mg or 11% Daily Value of vitamin C, keeping in mind that vitamin C activity expressed through food its very different that isolate, semi-synthetic ascorbic acid; in other words, that 6.7 mg is worth far more than the story of molecular weight alone can tell.   Another way to understand this is if you take a nutrient out of its natural context as a whole food, it behaves less like a nutrient and more like a chemical. 3) WHY THYROID HEALTH IS COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON SELENIUM

The thyroid is essential to some of the body’s most critical processes, including the development of the nervous and skeletal systems. For the thyroid to function normally, it must receive the right nutrition, and that means getting enough selenium. Selenium is an essential mineral and being deficient can lead to serious health problems such as Keshan disease, myxoedematous cretinism, Graves’ disease, and even thyroid destruction.


Although the body requires selenium, it does not produce selenium and you must get it through your diet. For most people, this isn’t a problem since many common foods are a good source of selenium. Additionally, selenium is available as a nutritional supplement.


Regardless of the source, selenium is a critical nutrient for the body and nowhere is this more evident than the thyroid. In fact, the thyroid has more selenium content per gram than any other organ. It’s also home to certain proteins called selenoproteins  which contain selenium-based amino acids. Before I discuss why this is so important to thyroid health, let’s first understand exactly what the thyroid does.


What Is a Thyroid?


Your thyroid is part of your endocrine system and one of the most crucial glands in your body. Located at the base of your throat, the thyroid produces the hormones that play a major role in your body’s growth, maturation, and metabolic processes. The thyroid hormones produced by the thyroid are triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine (T4), and calcitonin. T3 and T4 are critical for a normal metabolism. T4 also supports normal brain function, while calcitonin promotes normal bone growth.


How to Support Thyroid Health


There are a few simple steps you can take to support your thyroid. It is imperative that you minimize your stress levels. Stress is actually a hormone response that may negatively impact thyroid function. Exercise is a natural and extremely effective way to combat stress. Exercise can also help stimulate the secretion of thyroid hormones.


Getting enough sleep also helps support a healthy thyroid. Thyroid hormones can directly impact sleep quality. Avoiding toxins like BPA, fluoride, and pesticides is also a smart strategy as they can have a detrimental effect on the thyroid.


Following a balanced diet is one of the easiest ways to support your thyroid. Eat selenium-rich foods, as well as iodine-rich foods, as both are necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. While you’re at it, don’t forget about vitamin A, which also helps support normal thyroid health. When considering your diet, incorporate gluten-free grains since gluten has been associated with autoimmune thyroid diseases.


What Selenium Does for the Thyroid


The importance of selenium for your thyroid cannot be overstated. Most people know that iodine is critical to thyroid health. Selenium is less famous but equally important. Along with iodine and vitamin A, selenium helps remove thyroid-harming substances and supports normal thyroid structure.


Thyroid hormone metabolism is impaired without selenium because iodine-based enzymes, called iodothyronine deiodinases, cannot be synthesized. Iodothyronine deiodinases exist in several forms and are not yet fully understood, but do seem to play a role in preventing hypothyroidism. These enzymes are essential for the activation of thyroid hormones. So, while iodine tends to get most of the credit for thyroid health, it cannot actually carry out its function without help from selenium.


Your body does not produce its own selenium. All selenium must be obtained through food or supplements. Once ingested, the element is broken down into enzymes called selenoproteins. These enzymes exist in many forms, but two of the best understood are glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (TRx). The GPx and TRx enzymes promote antioxidant abilities on a cellular level. TRx also aids in cell growth and helps process dehydroascorbic acid into vitamin C. None of these vital enzymes could exist without selenium.


Selenium has also been shown to combat several thyroid-debilitating conditions.


How the Thyroid Relies on Selenium to Ward Off Disease


Common thyroid maladies can be caused by low selenium intake, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. With this condition, the thyroid first becomes inflamed and secretes excessive amounts of hormones. Then, over time, it starts producing far less than it needs.


Conditions like thyroiditis can lead to an imbalance of hormones and that can be the start of major disruptions in the body’s normal processes. Hypothyroidism, which is one such potential consequence, is a condition in which the thyroid fails to provide a sufficient level of thyroid hormones. The outcome can be serious and include abnormal heartbeat, low body temperature, and nervous system disorders. It can even disrupt the body’s ability to metabolize proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. What can contribute to hypothyroidism? You guessed it, selenium deficiency.


Role of Selenium in Nutrition


If thyroid health is important to you, you cannot overlook the importance of selenium. The body is made up of many parts that work together. Each part must be fuelled with essential nutrients like selenium. In addition to supporting thyroid health, selenium also plays a role in combating free radicals.
